Miami Modern Architecture
“Mimo is not just about Miami’s history but it’s about America’s history,” (Miami Modern) of the ’50s and ’60s represents a time when the middle-class took to the road — destination Miami — for fun in the sun. They were welcomed by these uniquely themed motels with their delightful architectural personality. It was like vacationing on a Hollywood set. Being surrounded by MIMO architecture from the 1950s and '60s, summons the era of carefree beach living where Rat Pack headliners such as Frank Sinatra performed. Mimo architecture brings the glorious past alive by fusing it with modern technology and classic timeless architecture. Visitors arrived in Miami and saw architectural features, with dramatic angles and flashing lights. Miami Modern is an umbrella term that captures a certain period of different modernist styles that developed in Miami in the 1950s and ’60s. After World War II architects embraced modernism, the design movement resulting in curved surfaces rather than straight, sunny colors instead of drabs, and walls with Swiss cheese holes that both allowed in the ocean breezes and exposed a zany streak in the otherwise serious style. Fans here call it "MiMo," short for Miami Modernism.
